Communication therapy is about supporting and improving your child's language development through a Total Communication and child-centered approach, where we teach through facilitated play and natural interactions within their environment. We take the time to observe how your child processes language and then build a plan that best fits them.
Understanding how your child processes language is the first step in our process. There is an analytic route where we use visual supports such as PECS or other AAC programs and there is also a Gestalt route. The majority of children on the spectrum or those labeled as "late talkers" are Gestalt Language Processors. These children pick up chunks of words through preferred movies, songs, and narrations that are delivered with rich intonation. We combine the way your child processes language with individualized activities that include your child's interests to encourage flexible and spontaneous language.
If communication services are deemed appropriate, individualized goals will be discussed with you and created based on the child’s needs, values, and preferences.
